Packaging Business Unit Manager

JOB SUMMARY Responsible for the three-shift operation and coordination of the Packaging Department. Direct reports are the three Packaging Managers. Primary objective is to ensure continuous improvement and efficient operation of the Packaging department to meet customer requirements in accordance with Safety, Quality, Service and Cost. Manage, coach, and develop direct reports to achieve day to day KPIs and long-term improvement. ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES • Ensure all team members understand and follow safety rules, guidelines, and practices. Develop best practices and standardization across department.

Assist and develop managers for proper completion of accident reports for safety incidents.

• Ensure all food safety standards and guidelines are followed, including Safe Quality Food (SQF), USDA and FDA.

• Manage coordination of packaging process for scheduled completion during shift, week, and long term. • Assist in ideation, development and execution of capital and expense projects.

• Responsible for attainment of KPI’s (e.g., gallons per labor hour, cost per pound), department budget and generation of performance data.

• Develop long term plans, including capital, expense, and operational, to drive long term performance gains and improved operating cost.

• Responsible for the development of the Packaging Managers and their teams.

• Responsible for accurate and timely completion of required documentation to enable clear traceability.

• Oversee 5S efforts in department and align area ownership goals for department safety and quality. • Manage ERP system transactions and manage inventory under area of control.

• Work directly with NPD/R&D personnel on new product launches and trials.

• Serves as mentor and coach for Managers and others in meeting company and department objectives.

• Communicate and update all relevant parties of any issues or changes. Lead/conduct department and team meetings.

• Monitor and initiate action to reduce or eliminate all waste.

• Work directly with QA and technical personnel on addressing and resolving deficiencies.

• Develop continuous improvement plans to improve Safety, Hygiene/Sanitation, Quality, Quantity and Cost

• Any other tasks deemed reasonable and requested by management.

LEVEL OF RESPONSIBILITY • Member of plant management team to work cross-functionally to set short term and long term direction.

• Works under general supervision. Makes decisions within clearly prescribed areas, and provides recommendations to others in matters that fall outside that area.

• Recommends actions and alternatives to plant team.

• Position has ocasional contact with customers.

• Position is directly responsible for generating revenue within area of responsibility.

• Ineffective actions could have a major impact on the organization’s public image or on the organization in terms of development, external relations, delays or attainment of organizational goals. Errors are often irreversible resulting in financial or public image losses extending over long periods.


• Oversees the work of others within area of responsibility and participates in hiring, firing, and performance management.

• Works cross funtionally to optimaize safety, quality, and cost.


• Requires four -seven years of experience; to include 5 years manufacturing management experience preferably in the food industry.

Prior experience with ERP system preferred.

• Able to speak and write in English. Must be able to speak and understand conversational Spanish.

• Must be proficient with MS Office programs, specifically Excel and Outlook.

• Must possess effective verbal and written communication skills.

• Work requires occasional physical exertion including some lifting of objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Mental & Visual Demands

• Work performed by this position requires considerable mental concentration to effectively execute complex tasks.

• Work requires continuous visual effort for extended periods of time.

Work Environment and Hazards

• Employee works in a manufacturing setting with frequent exposure to heat/cold, dust, or other factors that may require protective equipment and still pose a hazard.

• This position has regular exposure to hazards that could result in injury and loss of time at work.

• Limited travel may be required.
